Foxconn Looking to Open TFT-LCD Manufacturing Units in the U.S.

Postby kristine » 09 May 2017 10:14

A report indicates that Foxconn might be looking to open up 6G (sixth-generation) TFT-LCD manufacturing plants around the U.S. meant for IoT (Internet of Things) devices. These devices will range from mobile terminals to automobiles and medical care.

It is said that Foxconn is currently in talks with the State and Federal Governments of the U.S. to take things further. This comes on the heels of the Trump administration’s focus to bring more manufacturing jobs to the country.

Apple recently provided details on the employees it has in the U.S., surpassing the 2 million mark in 2016. Keeping this in mind, it’s understandable as to why Foxconn would want to open up manufacturing units within the U.S. The fact that Foxconn is one of Apple’s major supplier also opens up the possibility of the company producing LCD panels for the iPhone, iPad and the MacBook lineup.

The report says that Foxconn initially wanted to set up 8.5G or 10.5G manufacturing plants in the U.S. to produce LCD TV panels and modules for Sharp TVs. However, since Sharp has licensed its brand to Hisense in the U.S., Foxconn couldn’t go through with this. Sharp and Hisense signed a deal that runs through 2020. Foxconn’s talks with Hisense to sell back licensing rights for Sharp’s TVs in the U.S. didn’t bear any fruit, the reports added.

It’s still early days, so we’re not jumping to conclusions as of yet.
