What level would Apple be now if Steve Jobs wasn't fired for 10 years?

Probably out of business. Certainly not the company it is today. It might be just another Windows or Linux OEM. It's really hard to say since there are many paths it could have taken. There's a couple reasons why that would be:

Steve Jobs was not the CEO and didn't run Apple. He had a lot of influence with his powerful personality and expertise at manipulation as well as his position as co-founder, but he wasn't in charge of running the company.
Steve Jobs stated that the lessons he learned because of his departure and the time between then and when he returned to Apple made him the man that was capable of saving Apple. Given what was going on at Apple at the time and the man he was, he was not the best leader for Apple.

Some of Steve Jobs' strategies were pretty off and didn't make much business sense. Additionally, Steve Jobs came back to Apple just in time for technology to be good enough and the market ready for the innovations that Apple brought out during his tenure. The market and the technology was vastly different in the 80s. You could say the world wasn't ready for him.

Really it's impossible to say. I think that in hindsight, losing Steve Jobs was good for both Apple and Steve Jobs in the long run.

What's your opinion?
