Apple is finally embracing virtual reality with new Macs that are powerful enough to run VR apps and games. To support that commitment, Valve has launched its SteamVR platform on macOS in beta.

Virtual reality has been taking off in a big way in recent years. You can get a taste of it on high-end Android smartphones, but for the best VR experience, you need a powerful computer. For the first time, that computer can now be running macOS.

During its WWDC keynote on Monday, Apple announced a dedicated VR kit for developers, which includes an AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card and enclosure that can be hooked up to a modern Mac over Thunderbolt 3. It also unveiled a stunning VR-ready iMac Pro.

Now that macOS is finally capable of powering VR, Valve is wasting no time in giving Mac owners access to its SteamVR platform. The beta is accessible to anyone starting today, and it offers the same experience you’ll find on Windows and Linux.

There is a catch, however. Not only will you need a Mac running macOS 10.11.6, with a graphics card that can power VR apps and games, but you’ll also need an HTC Vive headset. Assuming you have all that, go have fun!
