THE majority of Australian iPhone users will have to upgrade their beloved smartphones this year or miss out on the new wave of augmented reality apps about to be released.

TWO thirds of Australian iPhone users will have to upgrade their beloved smartphones this year or miss out on the new wave of augmented reality apps about to be unleashed.

Apple last week released a programming tool called ARKit that will allow app makers to create a swag of entertainment, educational, shopping and gaming apps that seamlessly add digital elements into real-world scenes.

The problem for users of older Apple devices is that the augmented reality apps will require a device with an A9 or A10 chip to power the apps, which means everyone with an iPhone 6 or older will not make the cut.
Kantar Worldpanel reports that 63 per cent of Apple users in Australia have an iPhone 6 or older.

The iPhone 6, according to Kantar, was the biggest selling iPhone in Australia and, with a 17.3 per cent market share, remains the most popular iPhone.

Kantar’s calculation of the popularity of the iPhone 6 in Australia could be conservative, with Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi saying that 68 per cent of Australians with an iPhone have an iPhone 6 or older.
