The buzz about an iPhone 8 release in 2017 is getting stronger as more leaks and rumors about the device emerge. The newest leak about the smartphone entails that the iPhone might finally get two features that Android users have had for a long time – fast-charging and tap-to-wake functionality.
Sonny Dickson, an Australian smartphone enthusiast who is known for his leaks about the upcoming smartphone, revealed to Forbes that the upcoming iPhone might have these features.
Dickson indicated that the 2017 iPhone range might have three models, instead of two, which it has opted for since iPhone 6 — there might be two iPhone 7S models and a tenth-anniversary iPhone 8 on offer.
Fast Charging
In terms of fast charging, the phone might have a ‘Tristar 3 Hydra’ chip inside the charging port to support fast charging. This is slightly different than supporting fast charging on Android phones, which have a common charging port standard and are going towards a universal USB-C standard. Apple uses Lightening ports instead of the traditional Android charging ports.
This basically means that Apple might not be able to use existing fast charging standards such as Qualcomm’s Quick Charge and therefore, it will be interesting to see how the company solves this conundrum.
iPhone 8 has been earlier rumored to feature wireless charging.
Tap to wake
Apple might be catching up with Android by endowing its iPhone 8 with a tap to wake feature, but it might not be available on the other two iPhone variants releasing this year.
Apple will be facing competition from phones such as a Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8.
